Department Store Catalog

On this 1897 dry-goods catalog cover, the model is decked out in a gorgeous spring outfit, incongruously holding a small brown camera. The catalog is from Schlesinger and Mayer, a department store based in Chicago with branches all over the world including London, Paris, Berlin, Constantinople, Yokohama, and Shanghai. The store index on the back of the cover lists: "Capes, Carpets, Challies, Chemises, Children's bonnets and reefers, Collars, Cuffs, Corsets, Crepes and mourning goods, Cutlery, and Cycling hose" among its stock for sale---but no Cameras!
