Gerda Taro
Female War Photographer Killed in Action

In 1938, Gum, Inc. published this card in a "Horrors of War" series. It shows photographer Gerda Taro being crushed by a tank while covering the Spanish Civil War. She was twenty-five years old.

Gerda was the companion of the famous war photographer, Robert Capa. They began their professional careers in Paris by inventing fictious names and identities in order to sell photos. You can read their tale on a number of different websites, though there's some disagreement about who taught whom photography.
